------------------------------------ University of New Hampshire Peter T. Paul Chair in Space Science ------------------------------------ The University of New Hampshire seeks an outstanding individual in space science to fill the newly endowed Peter T. Paul Chair in the Space Science Center within both the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space and the Department of Physics. The tenure-track Chair includes a substantial annual research stipend that may be used for graduate, post-graduate, equipment or staff support. The Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) is a multidisciplinary scientific research institute dedicated to understanding the integrated behavior of the Earth and its surroundings. As a world leader in the fields of space science, terrestrial ecosystems, oceanography, atmospheric science and global climate change, EOS provides graduate education with an emphasis on interdisciplinary studies that contribute to understanding the dynamics of the Earth and the Earth-Sun system. The Department of Physics provides comprehensive undergraduate and graduate studies in physics, with specializations in space science, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. The successful candidate will enhance the prominence of the Space Science Center and the Institute in the space sciences, while helping to create and strengthen the interdisciplinary scientific environment that distinguishes the Institute. We seek an individual with the ability and desire to participate in graduate and undergraduate education and to lead a major, independent research effort in any of the active fields of the Center. These fields include solar, heliospheric, magnetospheric, ionospheric, and planetary physics, as well as high-energy astrophysics, with programs such as WIND, POLAR, ACE, SOHO, CLUSTER, EQUATOR-S, FAST, CGRO, SOLAR-B, HESSI, INTEGRAL, and STEREO. An active sounding rocket program, a theoretical group with strong ties to solar and interplanetary physics, and several technology development programs are also part of the Center. Location: The University of New Hampshire in Durham is located in the New Hampshire Seacoast Region, a region of natural beauty and pleasant communities within an hour's drive of Boston and Portland, and nearby the city of Portsmouth located on a harbor, with unique shops and historic sites. Requirements: Distinguished record of publication and research expertise in areas that complement and enhance Space Science Center programs. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Space Physics, Astrophysics, or related fields, seven or more years of professional research experience beyond the Ph.D. Inquiries and applications, including curriculum vitae, bibliography, a brief summary of teaching interests and future research plans, and the contact information of at least four references, should be directed to Prof. Roy Torbert, Dir., Space Science Center, EOS, Morse Hall, Univ. of NH, Durham, NH 03824. Application review begins Sept. 1, 2002. UNH is committed to excellence through diversity among its faculty and strongly encourages women and minorities to apply.
